Where have I gone? Well, just like everyone, Covid 19 happened.
On top of that I have been dealing with severe mental health issues brought on by becoming a victim of family violence and physical and emotional abuse. Serious stuff hey? Not usually a topic for comedy. The abuse has been so crippling, I’m afraid that at one point I felt I would never be creative or get back up on stage again. I shut the door on my life, stopped contact with friends and family and in fact, wanted my life to end. I was made to feel worthless indeed I was told I was “mediocre and the least talented person.”
Anyone who has experienced depression and emotional abuse will know that everything in you shuts down, a fog comes down over you. For me and many others this included my creative energy (any energy at all really). My brain that used to buzz with songs, ideas and tidbits just stopped working. Combine that with being told I was “fat, old and haggard” alongside many other slurs and taunts well, that doesn’t exactly assist with the situation.
I’m writing this update because I finally feel like I’ve let the curtains open on my life again (both physically and metaphorically). It’s early days and is going to take time but with the help of all the support I can get I am determined to get back to the energetic, happy person I was; that was taken away from me. I’m hoping to get back up on stage soon and perform once again. I’m not sure what it looks like yet but I’ve been starting to work on some more serious stuff and I’m quite solidly committed to be coming an advocate for victims/survivors of family violence. Especially to encourage speaking out about our experiences.
I want to thank all the people that have supported me, even when all I could do was shut the curtains, stay in bed and completely dispose of all self care.
I know I am not the only one suffering. If you are experiencing mental health issues and/or domestic abuse, below are some numbers you can reach out to.
Australia: Lifeline 13 11 14; 1800 RESPECT (Domestic Violence); Beyond Blue 1300 324 666
UK: Good Samaritans 116 123; National Domestic Abuse Hotline 0808 2000 247
For those of you in Australia – there is a fantastic private facebook group for victims too, which you can find via a group search. You can also reach out to me at any time DM me @_amanda_jane on Instagram
